The CSX4000 / CSX6000 / CSX7000 / CSX8000 chassis are the Shelby American continuation series — factory-built new Cobras produced from 1997 onward using original-format Shelby chassis numbering. Continuation cars are not replicas; Shelby American is the only entity legally authorized to put original-format Shelby chassis numbering on new cars. They are sold as rolling chassis without engine and transmission to satisfy US new-car regulations, with dealers installing the drivetrain at customer specification.
Production span and totals
-
CSX4000 production start: 1997 (per the Cobra Authority buyer’s guide)
-
Current production: CSX6000, CSX7000, and CSX8000 are the actively-produced models as of the date of last review on this page
-
Total continuation production: not stated in current cited sources; varies year to year. The continuation program is ongoing.
-
Shelby American built approximately 650 CSX4000-series continuation Cobras between 1997 and 2009. The CSX4000 series was the first generation of the continuation program, succeeded by the CSX6000 / CSX7000 / CSX8000 production lines that remain current. The continuation lineup
Per the Cobra Authority buyer’s guide, the current Shelby American continuation models are:
- CSX6000 — the 427 S/C Cobra. Big-block continuation, the most direct successor to the original CSX3 S/C cars.
- CSX7000 — the 289 FIA Cobra. Small-block continuation in FIA competition spec.
- CSX8000 — the 289 Street Cobra. Small-block continuation in street trim.
And historically:
- CSX4000 — 427 Cobras, the first continuation series. Production started 1997.
Defining mechanical characteristics
- Built by Shelby American directly, not by a licensed third-party replica manufacturer
- Sold as rolling chassis — no engine, no transmission. The dealer installs the drivetrain to the customer’s spec at point of sale. This is what allows the cars to skirt US new-car regulations and ship as new builds.
- Original-format chassis numbering is the legal distinction from replicas. Only Shelby American (and Superformance under explicit Carroll Shelby Licensing) can use Shelby-style chassis numbers. All other replica manufacturers use their own prefixes (BDR, KMP, SP/SP0, FFR, ERA, etc.).
- Construction details vary by model and over time. Some periods of continuation production sourced bodies and frames from Hi-Tech Automotive in South Africa (the same factory that produces Superformance cars), and from Kirkham Motorsports in Poland during the Kirkham/Shelby partnership era.
Variants within the family
- CSX4000 — 427 continuation cars; first generation of the program
- CSX6000 — current 427 S/C continuation
- CSX7000 — current 289 FIA continuation
- CSX8000 — current 289 Street continuation
Each current chassis prefix corresponds to a specific original-era spec target (427 S/C, 289 FIA, 289 Street). The continuations are configuration-faithful to those original-era variants but are new cars, not restored or recreated originals.
How to identify
- Chassis number prefix: CSX4, CSX6, CSX7, or CSX8 followed by a four-digit number (e.g., CSX6047, CSX7012, CSX8101). Original-era cars are in the CSX (no-prefix-digit) and CSX3 ranges; anything CSX4000 or higher is a continuation.
- Production date post-1997 confirms continuation status
- Documentation: Shelby American issues continuation cars with their own paperwork distinct from original-era SAAC registry data
- Build sheet identifies what drivetrain configuration the dealer installed
Notable chassis numbers
To be added as build articles for specific continuation cars are written.
- CSX4065 is documented as one of the earliest CSX4000-series continuation builds, with an MSO issued and signed by Carroll Shelby in December 1997. The car was the cover feature of the Winter 2016 issue of Shelby American Magazine. [Source: https://cobra-authority.com/1997-shelby-cobra-427-s-c-csx4065/]
