Unlike most competitors, the MKII Slab Side is built on the successful Tojeiro-styled round tube chassis and features an authentic transverse leaf spring suspension to give owners an exceptionally authentic driving experience. Superformance MKII 289 Slab Side Chassis:
The Chassis is the original John Tojero designed 3” tubular rail ladder with cross-member. This chassis is reproduced using drawings obtained from AC cars and also implements the necessary changes to utilize rack and pinion steering . The 3” tubes are tig and mig welded to guarantee a safer and stronger chassis. This is much stronger than the arc and gas welded originals. Pain staking efforts were made to reproduce the chassis as close to an original as possible while incorporating a few modern improvements, like inserting a 3″ square tube through the main rails to prevent flexing. Building the cars with a meticulous eye on authenticity took time, but this resulted in a superior driving experience.
Superformance MKII 289 Slab Side Body:
The Superformance MKII roadster bodywork replicates the later of the 289`s which incorporated modifications to fender flares that will accommodate the slightly wider tires fitted onto chrome wire wheels. One of the improvements made by Hi tech was that the footwells were tweaked so that the taller North Americans can now sit comfortably.
Superformance bodies are available in fourteen standard colors with or without striping:
- Wimbledon White
- Light Silver
- Titanium Silver
- Dark Silver
- Yellow
- Monza Red
- Sunset Red
- Malachite Green
- British Racing Green
- Indigo Blue
- Royal Blue
- Portofino Blue
- Galaxy Blue
- Black
Striping can be any of the standard colors and is painted as the first coat color on the body creating a smooth finish. Stripes are an added option.
Superformance MKII 289 Slab Side Front & Rear Suspension:
To compliment an original chassis you need to follow the same rules when it comes to the suspension. It had to be period correct, or as close as possible. The original slab side had a transverse leaf spring style suspension which requires different length springs to change camber settings we decided to use heim joints which were used on some of the original competition cars.
Another change with regards to safety was to add an additional pick-up point to the chassis to increase the shear strength of the bolt passing through the lower control arm rose joint or poly-bushed rod end. The original springs were made of thinner steel than that available today. In an effort to keep compression rate the same, this car comes with one blade less and “free camber” was changed to keep the ride heights equal from front to rear. This insistence on authenticity means that owners of a Superformance MKII Roadster will have virtually the same driving experience as the original.
Superformance MKII 289 Slab Side Engine and Transmission:
An Original would have probably been a 289 with a B.W T10. Today, the recommendation would be a 289/302 based engine with a more modern Tremec TKO or similar transmission.
Superformance MKII 289 Slab Side Interior:
Attention to small details like the replication of the glove box knob and the correct use of gauges make this car stand out from the others. A side screen pocket is fitted behind the seats on the rear bulkhead and door map pockets are also incorporated in the doors. Lush carpeting finishes off the cabin for a comfortable feel on the road.
MKII 289 FIA
Designed to emulate the great Cobra 289 race cars from that nostalgic golden era of racing in the 1960s. The MKII FIA is the 1st licensed continuation of the original AC-derived 289 Cobra that first appeared in 1962 winning 5 races. Loyal to the original lines and proper nostalgic characteristics of the original 1962 Cobra FIA, this car is built for the heart-racing 289 motor and a more modern Tremec TKO transmission. The MKII FIA can be tracked or street driven.
Unlike most competitors, the MKII FIA is built on the successful Tojeiro-styled round tube chassis and features an authentic transverse leaf spring suspension to give owners an exceptionally authentic driving experience. The MKII FIA is a licensed “Shelby” through Superformance’s exclusive agreement with Shelby American.
What does “FIA” Mean?
The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA; English: International Automobile Federation) is an association established on June 20, 1904 to represent the interests of motoring organizations and motor car users. Superformance MKII 289 FIA Design:
Based on the FIA and USRRC endurance racers, the Superformance MKII FIA has many unique features. Just as the originals saw modifications to the AC Ace platform to improve them for racing, the Superformance MKII FIA gets a series of changes to differentiate it from lesser Cobras.
Superformance MKII 289 FIA Chassis:
To truly replicate the cornering feeling felt by the racers of the day, the chassis had to be as close to the original as possible. Unlike other manufacturers, the engineers of the Superformance MKII FIA have resisted the urge to make the ride “better” by fitting a reinforced chassis or unequal length control arms with coil-over shocks. Instead, only small functional changes were made for safety or practicality purposes. In fact, the original AC drawings of the chassis, springs, shocks and body dimensions were used to form the necessary jigs.
The 3” pipes have been tig and mig welded with computer assistance to guarantee a safer and stronger chassis than the arc and gas welded originals. The chassis is just about as close to the original as possible in this modern day. Building the cars with a meticulous eye on authenticity took time, but in the end, we feel that effort pays off in a superior driving experience for customers.
Superformance MKII 289 FIA Body:

Superformance MKII 289 FIA Front & Rear Suspension:
Just like with the chassis, the same rule applied with the suspension development – it had to be period correct, or as close to it as possible. While the original used a transverse leaf spring style suspension, that arrangement requires different length springs to change camber settings. Because of that, the decision was made to go with heim joints, just like some of the original competition cars used. In fact, two options are offered here – The first being rose joints and the second being adjustable rod ends with poly bushings for a slightly less harsh ride.
Another change for safety was to add an additional pick-up point to the chassis in order to increase the shear strength of the bolt passing through the lower control arm rose joint or poly-bushed rod end. The original springs were made of thinner steel than that available today, so the engineers milled the modern units to the correct size and thickness. This insistence on authenticity means that owners of a Superformance MKII FIA will have virtually the same driving experience as those original racers from the ’60s.
Superformance MKII 289 FIA Engine and Transmission:
Under the hood of the originals resided a race 260 or 289 equipped with Webers. Only the first 75 cars were fitted with the 260 before the switch to the 289. The FIA cars also featured a Harrison radiator expansion tank (sourced from a 1963 Corvette) that was fitted above the transverse spring, and side exhausts that exited at the rear of the doors.
Superformance MKII 289 FIA Interior:
The FIA dash was altered by leveling the two shorter elements on either side of the center stack. This allowed the steering column to be dropped to give a more comfortable racing position as well as making enough space for the 3-3/8″ Stewart Warner tachometer to fit above it. In this position it was more visible to the driver. The rest of the instruments were replaced by the larger 2-5/8″ gauges and arranged differently on the dash. The speedometer, for instance, has been relegated to the passenger side. The bottom of the dash also features an upturned lip for strengthening, which also helps cure cowl shake. Strangely the grab handle remained, possibly to meet the FIA production regulations.

Superformance Chassis Numbers
The Superformance Cobra Chassis Number exists in one of these four formats:
1.) COB** or COB** – *** 5 or 8 character form: Used on cars up to 031
2.) AC9CSLK1000AM1*** 17 character form: Used on cars 032 through 577 and on cars 579, 580, 581, 582, 583, 584, 586. The 5th digit character is “S” for side pipes or “R” for rear exhaust – The 6th character is “L” for left hand drive or “R” for right hand drive
3.) SP*** 5 character form: Used on cars 578, 585, 587, 588, 589, 590.
4.) SP0**** 7 character form: Used on cars 591 and later. (PLEASE NOTE: the correct prefix is SP”zero” and not SP”oh”)
The asterisks (*) are the Car Number you are looking for that vary from car to car. Even if your VIN number fits this format, it may not be not be your chassis number. The only accurate way to determine the Superformance Chassis Number is as follows.
Locating the Superformance Cobra Chassis Number:
1.) The Chassis serial number is located on the VIN plate on top of the passenger foot well as viewed from the engine compartment. If you suspect the State removed it or replaced it with their own VIN…
A.) Open the hood. Look in from the driver’s side.
B.) Locate the upper front cross member. It is just in front of the engine. For reference, it typically has the remote oil filter mounted on it.
C.) On the top of the cross member about two inches from the left (driver’s side) upright, a number is stamped directly on the frame cross member. This is the Superformance Chassis Number. See above for determining your actual “car number.”
If you have a metal plate pop riveted in this location, your dealer has covered up the Superformance Chassis Number with you state VIN number. In this case, do not remove the VIN plate. Write “Covered by VIN plate” in the space for Superformance Chassis Number. In this case, it is particularly important that you verify the Car Number as indicated.
The chassis number is also stamped on the hood hinges. Check either hood hinge plate where it is bolted to the hood. The number is stamped into the hinge plate. It may be partially filled with paint and hard to read, but it can be read. The number may also be written in grease pencil in the hinge plate, but use the stamped number.
