Superformance

Seed file — full Archetype C buildout deferred to Phase 1.

Lede

Superformance was founded in 1996 as Superformance International Inc. by Hi-Tech Automotive, Ltd. It is the only manufacturer licensed by Carroll Shelby Licensing, Inc. to build Cobra reproductions, putting it in a regulated tier above unlicensed replica makers. Cars are built in South Africa at the Hi-Tech Automotive factory — the same facility that has produced Shelby American continuation cars in some periods — and are sold turn-key minus drivetrain.

Founding and history

  • 1996 — founded as Superformance International Inc. by Hi-Tech Automotive, Ltd.
  • Licensed by Carroll Shelby Licensing, Inc. as the only authorized replica manufacturer

Build process

Turn-key minus drivetrain. Superformance installs everything except the engine and transmission, which the buyer (or dealer) specifies.

Model lineup

Per the cobra-authority.com buyer’s guide:

  • MKII 289 Slab Side
  • MKII 289 FIA
  • MKIII 427 S/C
  • MKIII 427 Roadster
  • MKIII-CS 427

Drivetrain conventions

Ford engines remain the norm — small-block 289 for the MKII cars, big-block 427 for the MKIII cars. Specific engine selection is the buyer’s choice; Superformance ships the car ready to accept the chosen powertrain.

Notable details and standards

  • The only manufacturer licensed by Carroll Shelby Licensing, Inc. to build reproductions
  • Built in South Africa by Hi-Tech Automotive, Ltd.
  • Shared factory heritage with Shelby continuation series (CSX6000+) in some periods — the same plant produces both at different times

Representative builds

To be cross-linked once build articles exist.

Sources and further reading
